Going Vegan?!

V E G A N. It is so trendy right now and part of me thinks that that is a good thing. I love how, we as Americans, are wanting to be more aware of what is going in our bodies, where our food is coming from, what is in it, and what isn’t. Part of me, also thinks that we need to be aware that just because food is labeled ‘vegan,’ doesn’t mean it is healthy or good for you, either (did you know Oreos are vegan?) And although I could go on a long tangent about that, I want to stick to the positives of living a vegan lifestyle and why I am wanting to go vegan for the next 30 days (or longer, depending on how this test drive goes!)

Let’s first talk about what a vegan is: being a vegan is essentially eating plant based food and avoiding (i.e. not eating) anything that comes from an animal. Some ‘extreme’ vegans don’t eat honey (since it is made from bees.) However, I am not going to take that this far. I am going to focus on eating all things plant based, while still using honey.

The more I learn about nutrition, the more I am convinced that eating mostly plant based is the most nutritious way to eat. I am not a dietitian or nutritionist, but from the research I have done and am doing, I am finding that eating mostly plant based is one of the healthiest ways to eat.  I am excited to see what will happen with this trial month. Honestly, I never want to do something just because it’s a trend or fad. And I don’t want to do something as a forever lifestyle change if I haven’t tried it out yet. So, this month of April I am going vegan and trying it out. I want to see if I feel any different, experience any significant changes, or even enjoy it.

As someone who has gone through an ED, I want to be careful not to necessarily label foods as ‘BAD,’ or good but to choose to fuel my body in this method as a trial and error test. I honestly think that I will really enjoy this new test. I am one of those weird foodies that loves to try out different ‘diets’ (although I wouldn’t call being a vegan a diet but I can’t think of a better word at this hour, haha) and I am excited to see what I can come up with for 30 days! I don’t think it will be a huge change, since I normally do about 70% plant based eating during my typical week.

I will keep you guys updated!
